The beauty industry uses this word a lot, but would you be able to tell us what your UNDERTONE is? In this blog post, ELES shares tips on how to identify your undertone.

The word itself means the color beneath the surface of your skin. Understanding your undertone will help you choose makeup (and clothing) that looks great on you.

Undertones can be classified into three types:

Warm Yellow, peachy, or golden undertones Cool
Neutral: a combination of cool and warm undertones

These tips can help you find your true color in the absence of a glam team. Knowing how to identify an undertone is essential for aspiring makeup artists. It will also help you create the perfect makeup base for your clients. Here are some tips:

  1. A white cloth can determine the undertone of your skin!
This technique is similar to the white balance that videographers use. After washing your skin, place a white sheet or cloth near a window to get natural light. Someone can check the contrast between your skin and the white paper or cloth. If your skin looks:

    • Golden or yellow = WARM
    • Pinkish or flushed = COOL
    • can’t tell? = NEUTRAL
  2. What is better, gold or silver?
Ask someone which gold or silver bracelet they think looks best on you. You will glow and look radiant in:

    • Gold Jewelry = WARM
    • Silver and Platinum Jewelry = COOL
  3. What clothing looks great on you?
It’s simple to tell what colors are cool and warm when choosing clothes. Cool colors are those that remind you of the sea, sky, or water. Think of warm colors like the Sun, autumn leaves, and earth colors. You will look great in clothing that is color:

    • Orange, Yellow, and Dark Green = WARM
    • The colors gray, white, black, and blue are cool.
    • All colors. You are blessed if you can look like a supermodel with everything you wear! = NEUTRAL

The Sun can also reveal your undertone.

    • You will get a golden-brown skin tone when you lie in the Sun.
    • You will burn when you are exposed to the Sun.

Eye Colour
It is not always accurate, but it can be helpful.

    • Blue, gray, or green eyes = COOL
    • Brown, amber, or hazel = WARM

Check your Veins!

    • Blue veins = COOL
    • Green veins = WARM
    • in between = NEUTRAL
