Video games are amazing! What could be more amazing than playing a videogame and purchasing new skins or clothing items for your avatar? You know what I’m talking about if you like playing video games. The style and avatar you choose will also represent you.

Avatar clothing and skins have been around for many years. Zwinky, a video game that used customizable and dressable avatars for players in the early days of gaming, allowed users to buy avatar clothing. As a big video game fan, I tend to use skins or avatars that are similar to me, like Bitmoji.

Bitmoji allows Snapchat users to customize their avatars to fit specific events and occasions, including weddings, pregnancy, or seasons. This avatar creator has partnered with huge brands such as Adidas, Levi’s, and Jordan. Wearing designer clothes on an app such as Bitmoji or in a Zwinky game is the same as wearing designer clothing in real life. Often, players can only buy coins for designer clothing, such as Rocawear and Juicy.

Style in Video Gaming

The Generation Z generation is a technology-driven group that doesn’t mind spending a few dollars on gaming. Gen Z actually spends around 40 billion dollars annually on skins, clothing, and accessories for their avatars in video games.

Fashion brands did not work with video game companies before Zwinky. Fashion brands are now expanding their ways of attracting customers, thanks to the expansion of technology. Why do fashion brands want gaming?

Fashion brands are trying to get younger consumers to buy their outfits. They will start with the clothing that is featured in video games. More than ten luxury brands are currently working with video games. Male gamers aged 13-45 are the majority of game lovers. They are also most likely to buy avatar skins.

Fashion brands that are pushing into video games are changing how customers interact with their favorite brands. As an example, Fortnite’s game creator, Balenciaga, has partnered up with the Fortnite Store as of September 20, 2021.

What fashion brands gain from gaming collaborations

These partnerships allow consumers to buy virtual designs at lower prices from fashion brands that are aspirational. This is a great opportunity for designers. Video game companies also use collaborations to distinguish themselves from their competition. Louis Vuitton, for example, partnered with League Of Legends to create two skins. Fashion brands made clothes that would feel natural in the game to avoid the appearance of product placement.

Fashion brands that tap into the gaming industry have shown that people are willing to spend money on changing their character’s look, especially if it comes from a company they admire. Fashion brands have proven that video games can be used to attract an audience both virtually and physically.
